II training workshop for environmental technicians from the Administration of Mongolia

During the month of September 2016, Emgrisa gave a practical technical training course on the remediation of sites contaminated by heavy metals and especially by mercury. The same as for the workshop held in 2015, the course is part of the project “Provision of Remedial Solutions for the Boroo Mercury Contaminated Site and Recovery of Mercury”, whose successful contractor is the consortium in which it integrates Emgrisa together with Mayasa (also belonging to the Sepi group) and the Greek company POLYECO.
This project is funded by UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Agency), being the beneficiary of the Ministry of Environment of Mongolia.
The course consisted in two practical sessions partaken in the actual contaminated site of the River Boroo, located approximately 70 miles North from the capital Ulaanbaatar.
The training focused upon remediation, analysing the different decontamination techniques used for heavy metals. Laboratory tests carried out within the scope of the project were presented with samples taken at the site (thermal desorption, nanoparticles immobilization, soil washing, chemical stabilization and phytoremediation). In addition, trials were developed on a smaller scale in the field using the techniques of chemical stabilization and immobilization with nanoparticles. Specifically, the development of these pilot trials allowed the participants to gain experience in the work required for decontamination projects.
The course was attended by professionals from various administrations, including the Ministry of the Environment, National Institute of Chemistry, Specialized Inspection Agency, Emergency Management Unit, analytical laboratories, etc.
