On the 26th of October 2016, a technical-scientific event was held in the city of Lima about Contaminated Sites by Service Stations, which was promoted by the Ministry for the Environment of Peru and ReLASC (Red Latinoamericana de Prevención y Gestión de Sitios Contaminados), in English, Latin American Network for the Prevention and Management of Contaminated Sites.

The objective of this technical dialogue was none other than to exchange experiences about the investigation and remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater in these particular sites, that involve the storage and sale of fuel products and at the same time many are located in an urban area which poses a greater environmental risk than one would expect in such a relatively small facility.

This event was inaugurated by the Ing. Giuliana Becerra, General Director of Environmental Quality – MINAM, who mentioned the special interest placed by the Peruvian Ministry for the Environment to promote these types of conferences about these singular problems.

José Angel Andrés Anadón, the Director of the Peru Office of Emgrisa, geologist and environmental consultant with a professional trajectory of more than 18 years, shares with the participating professionals the methods of investigation soil and groundwater contamination as well as a presentation on the most common techniques used for remediating these types of sites, based upon the experience of real cases completed by Emgrisa.

Prior to the presentation made by Emgrisa, the technicians for the General Directorate for Energetic Environmental Matters of the MINEM and technicians from OEFA, made known their responsibilities and competencies, as well as the current problems seen from each sector.

The conference was concluded by a forum of questions and open debate in which certain questions were addressed to such as: aspects relative to the responsibilities with regard to damages caused by the affection of soil and groundwater, systems of environmental control and inspections, limitations with respect to some of the technologies used for remediation, etc.

We like to emphasize the success of the participation due to the presence of technical staff of different administrations, organisms of inspection, environmental consultants, etc., with an important exchange of opinions and real experiences.

Emgrisa as a member of ReLASC, promotes its activity on providing consulting and environmental engineering services, with special emphasis on the problems caused by contaminated soils and associated groundwater, as well as the treatment of contaminated soils and industrial waste.
